recent goods Failures Throws Doubt on Free Market's quality to Deliver quality

The news that Toyota is having to recall colse to 2.3 million vehicles colse to the world as a succeed of a gas pedal problem is unwelcome at a time when Japan is striving to emerge from recession. While other car manufacturers may benefit from Toyota's problems, a weakened Japanese business is not good news for the world economy in general. Following on from the toxic debt problem which strangled banks internationally, the consumer would be forgiven for mental that goods ability is being sacrificed in the name of company profit.

Gurus of the past have always maintained that the free store is the best way to deliver the best goods at the best prices, but what happens when associates are so strapped for cash (or greedy for profit) that they have to take short cuts to maintain profitability, or else look to unethical solutions, as in the case of selling mortgages to unsuitable applicants? Clearly there is a point beyond which the behalf motive begins to operate against the benefits of the consumer.

Another case in point is the speed with which new technology is helping manufacturers to develop new product. This week Steve Jobs of Apple announced the launch of the iPad. The goods was well received by gadget lovers and hailed as setting a new benchmark for computers. The problem is consumers have already spent billions on laptops, notebooks, kindles and iPhones.

Many will not be happy that their cherished 2009 Christmas gift is already out of date in January 2010! Moreover, what will happen now to associates left with precious obsolete inventory that no one wants anymore? Tech associates colse to the world have to move at lightning speed to compete and out-manoeuvre each other, in the process wasting millions if not billions on R&D and manufacturing costs. This much waste cannot be good for the planet.

Perhaps there is an conference emerging, now that we have reached the limits of global expansion, for some kind of centralised co-ordination of goods development that enables associates to focus on ability without the risk of being outflanked by scurrilous marketing tactics. Co-operating with, rather than sabotaging, each other means that associates can start putting the product, and therefore customer satisfaction, first. A manufacturing coordinating body would make the environment and use of resources its main consideration.

The body would be financed by the associates itself and be liable to fines whenever they failed to meet ethical, environmental and ability criteria. It would also regulate against unfair and unjustified profiteering at the cost of customers. The free store unregulated is a time bomb. Just as we are now regulating the financial institutions, perhaps its time to regulate the manufacturers too.
